Do Your Best

CTR Champions and Academic Champions have made a personal promise to obey the first part of the Boy Scout Oath: “On my honor I will do my best.”  What a marvelous promise to make to yourself and to others: to do your best. You are more talented at certain things than some people, and there are people more talented than you in other things. These comparisons are not important. What’s important is that you do your best no matter what amount of talent you possess. Doing your best brings peace of mind and a feeling of self-satisfaction.

John Wooden, former UCLA basketball coach and winner of 10 National Championships had deep insightfulness about doing your best.

Students, whether you are playing basketball or singing a song or writing an English paper or reading a book: Do Your Best. Do your best and let the consequences follow. You will not have any regrets when you do your best.

Shannon was an outstanding junior high school student. She was an overachiever, and she always strived to do her best. She studied so hard that she became the top student in the entire junior high school. How? She was taught to do her best, and her best brought her to the top, even membership into the CTR Club and the Academic Champion Club. Her hard work made her a Champion. You too can be an CTR/ Champion if you DO YOUR BEST.

Character vs Player

Many believe that you should work and play to win at all cost, forgetting about honesty, integrity,  good character and sportsmanship. While winning is important and enjoyable, it is not as important as being a good sport for participation. Wins and losses come and go, but character is and will be vital at all times. We don't even remember who won the World Series three years ago, or who won the NCAA basketball championship two years ago, and for all practical purposes, it really doesn't matter to us now who won or lost. But what does matter now is the type of person you are; this is the critical topic 24/7.

Students, always Choose the Right and you'll be a happy and successful person. The good news is that you can win and also be the best sport at the same time and enjoy the best of both worlds. The type of person you are is more crucial that winning, losing, or the level of your athletic skill.

"What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player."

Character vs Reputation

John Wooden once stated that we should be more concerned with our CHARACTER than our REPUTATION. His believe was that our character is what we are while our reputation is merely what others think we are. In the book,"Becoming a Person of Influence," authors John Maxwell and Jim Dornan share more on the difference of these two words:

The circumstances amid which you live determine your
reputation
The trust you believe determines your
characterReputation is what you are supposed to be; character is what you are…Reputation is the photograph; character is the face…Reputation comes from one without; character grows up from within…Reputation is what you have when you come to a new community:Character is what you have when you go away.
Your
 reputation is learned in an hour;
Your
character does not come to light for a year…Reputation grows like a mushroom; Character lasts like eternity…Reputation makes you rich or makes you poor; Character makes you happy or makes you miserable…Reputation is what men say about you on your tombstone; Character is what the angles say about you before the throne of God.

Plan

"When you fail to plan, you plan to fail."
