Persistence and Growth

Amazing Bamboo Growth

One of my most favorite inspirational examples about persistence is the story of an Asian Bamboo species that even after five years of watering, weeding, and fertilizing is barely visible. Then, in a span of about six weeks, it grows two and a half feet a day to 90 feet and higher. It grows so fast that you can literally “hear” it growing. The question to ask is did the bamboo grow 90 feet in six weeks or did it grow 90 feet in five years? Obviously it grew 90 feet in five years, for all the time when growth wasn’t visible it was developing a massive root system that would later support its magnificent growth.

Your Conscience

Your conscience is your personal, internal compass. Look inside your heart and do what it tells you because it will not lead you astray. Your conscience directs your feelings telling you what is right and what is wrong. Do what your conscience prompts you to do, to CTR, and you will have a clear and happy conscience. Your conscience will hurt if you CTW, and you will be very unhappy; therefore, you will know that you have chosen the wrong.

A magnetic compass shows us directions, and "Conscience is our magnetic compass."

What is the Aim of True Education?

"Character is the aim of true education; and science, history and literature are but means used to accomplish this desired end. Character is not the result of chance, but of continuous right thinking and right acting. True education seeks to make men and women not only good mathematicians, proficient linguists, profound scientists, or brilliant literary lights, but also, honest men, with virtue, temperance, and brotherly love. It seeks to make men and women who prize truth, justice, wisdom, benevolence, and self-control as the choicest acquisitions of a successful life. It is regrettable that modern education so little emphasizes these fundamental elements of true character.

Character vs Player

Many believe that you should work and play to win at all cost, forgetting about honesty, integrity,  good character and sportsmanship. While winning is important and enjoyable, it is not as important as being a good sport for participation. Wins and losses come and go, but character is and will be vital at all times. We don't even remember who won the World Series three years ago, or who won the NCAA basketball championship two years ago, and for all practical purposes, it really doesn't matter to us now who won or lost. But what does matter now is the type of person you are; this is the critical topic 24/7.

Students, always Choose the Right and you'll be a happy and successful person. The good news is that you can win and also be the best sport at the same time and enjoy the best of both worlds. The type of person you are is more crucial that winning, losing, or the level of your athletic skill.

"What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player."
