Navajo Indian Nation
Keeping with the November Native American Indian Heritage Month, today you will take a Field Trip to the Arizona Navajo Indian Reservation Nation and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
What's a hogan?
Hogan, traditional dwelling and ceremonial structure of the Navajo Indians of Arizona and New Mexico. Early hogans were dome-shaped buildings with log, or occasionally stone, frameworks. Once framed, the structure was then covered with mud, dirt, or sometimes sod. The entrance generally faced east, toward the rising sun, and was usually covered with a blanket. Except for a circular opening in the roof to allow smoke to escape, traditional hogans were without windows or interior divisions.
Pine Ridge Indian Reservation,
South Dakota
Pine Ridge, South Dakota is the poorest place in the United States. It's an Indian Reservation where families live in abject poverty. A group rode on horseback from Boulder, Colorado to Pine Ridge to raise money and awareness for the people who live there.
Students, hope you enjoyed your Field Trip today to Arizona and South Dakota. Someday the Indians will blossom as a rose. Their time is coming and they will be blessed.
