Character vs Player

Many believe that you should work and play to win at all cost, forgetting about honesty, integrity,  good character and sportsmanship. While winning is important and enjoyable, it is not as important as being a good sport for participation. Wins and losses come and go, but character is and will be vital at all times. We don't even remember who won the World Series three years ago, or who won the NCAA basketball championship two years ago, and for all practical purposes, it really doesn't matter to us now who won or lost. But what does matter now is the type of person you are; this is the critical topic 24/7.

Students, always Choose the Right and you'll be a happy and successful person. The good news is that you can win and also be the best sport at the same time and enjoy the best of both worlds. The type of person you are is more crucial that winning, losing, or the level of your athletic skill.

"What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player."

John Wooden

  1. Everyone wants a winner and no one wants a loser. It is true that everyone does want a winner, but everyone wants an honest good winner more. You can win in something, but still be a loser if you have an awful character. Likewise, you can lose in something and have a perfect character and be a good person. When something like this happens, who is the real winner? The person who won with an awful character or the person who lost with a perfect character. I would say the one with the perfect good character and that is what I strive to have in the future.

  2. This quote is very important in life. It is true and very inspiring. What it is saying is that the person that you are as a regular person is important. It is more important than the life that you have as a basketball player. You should always choose the right. You will have a better life.

  3. when being competitive you sometimes change as a person. you turn more aggressive and more wanting; as in wanting to win, wanting to beat that other(s). its more important to be who you really are than be fake. for example, i've experienced playing basketball, and things can get a bit tuff, but all along I am who i am, no one else but myself. always choose the right and be yourself.

  4. Alejandra P: According to this statement, what its saying is that you as a person is more important than you knowing how to play basketball player. Also it may be saying that you personality is important as the game of basketball it too.

  5. I agree with this quote because, even though you are named the MVP of multi-years in a row, you need to have good character. What's a team/player/singer/actor/ or actress without it's fans. When a person sees that the other has a good attitude and good character you'll notice that everyone likes them. That's why it is not so much about what's in the outside but what's inside their core, their soul and heart.

I agree that your character is far more important than just winning games by cheating. You dont have to cheat to win,it makes you a loser. You can win games fair and square by just simply working and training hard.Play with sportmanship and fairness,so choose the right and you will live life with no regrets.

  8. What this quote means is that well its important to be a good person. That it's important to be a good sportsman but also to have good character. I think that people admire a athlete a lot more when they have good character. Losing or winning isn't all that matters. What matters most is to have fun, So alwayss choose the right!!

  9. It Is More Important To Be A Better All Around Person Then To Be A Better All Around Player! You Could Be A Great Player And Be Hated! Thats Just Sad To See! You Could Be An Average Player And Have A Great Person! Everyone Would Love You Because You Show How Nice You Are!

  10. this quote is saying that when someone join a team. When they leave they leave but the character still stays in the hall of fame. its stay there for people could see you play and they could learn from you. For example like if you don't choose the right you won't be important like MJ he left his hall of fame in basketball. So its important to be your own character in life.

  12. I agree with this quote, because what you are as a person is far from what you as an athlete. You show your difference of and on the filed because you are the one who CTR. So you are far more different person from an athlete.

  13. What matters most is your character and what kind of person you are. Your good sportsmanship is way more important than how good you play or how good you are in whatever you do. Being a better person counts more because thats how you are outside of the game in everyday life. Having good character helps you have a more peaceful and enjoyable life because you can get along with everyone and just enjoy. I think that having a bad character spoils your life and makes it hard to enjoy fun times with others.

  14. I agree with this quote. What you are as a person is more important than what you are as a basketball player or any other athlete.Your only going to be a athlete for a couple of years but your going to need a great personality live a good life. If you just want to be a better athlete and just want to compete no one will like you.

  15. This quote is true because your only and athlete for such a short time and your personality is always going to be with you. Always have a respectful and positive personality and that will make you a good person. An athlete that has a good personality is a person with good sportsmanship. Always carry a good personality and you will be successful. Always choose the right!!!
